There is NOTHING in this world that drives me more nuts than wasting time. Time is all we have on this earth in our life. In fact, it’s called a “lifetime” for a reason.
This includes long and less than optimal workouts or workouts that don’t ideally suit our goals.
I’ve gone through a series of why we do metabolic resistance and metabolic conditioning training for fat loss inside of my blog. I’ll link to them later in this post if you want to go back and read them.
My point, If fat loss is your aim then multi joint, multi big muscle group exercises are your game.
If you were training your legs in a typical leg extension machine you’ll work just the front part of your leg, known as the quadriceps, on a fixed linear plane through a range of motion set by the machine. You work very few assistance muscles or additional muscles in the process. Also the calorie requirement and total max effort you have to put out is limited to just generate the force to raise and lower your selected weight at the tempo and recovery between repetitions and sets you’ve set for yourself. That’s it.
Compare that to the front squat where most of the load is in the front of the body. It too targets the quadriceps, but it also includes so much more. You need to generate force with your hips, glutes (think nicer butt), inner and outer thigh and holding that weight with you are your shoulders. You’re playing against gravity in every plane of movement which secondarily incorporates the upper and middle back, your core and your calves.
Consider how much more of a hormonal, metabolic and dynamic of a response your body has to have just to perform this compound exercise. You know the whole adage of patting your head, rubbing your stomach, chewing gum and walking at the same time being akin to multi-tasking, well this is a similar response for your metabolism and hormonal processes in this exercise.
